Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing educational needs for caring (ENC) among family of elders with dementia (EWD).
Methods: The participants were 98 family members of EWD diagnosed by medical test at the Dementia Telemedicine Control Center of Gangwon Province, Korea. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan-test, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 14.0.
Results: The average score for ENC was 3.24 and the factor which had the highest score was ’management of family problems’. ENC had significant correlations with degree of symptoms in EWD’s and with family care burden. Variables significantly influencing ENC were degree of symptoms in EWD’s, and family care burden, income and education level. These variables accounted for 59.9% of the variance of ENC.
Conclusion: Findings of this study suggest that nurses should consider degree of symptoms of EWD and care burden of family members when planning educational programs and/or conducting research.
