Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing educational needs for caring (ENC) among family of elders with dementia (EWD).
Methods: The participants were 98 family members of EWD diagnosed by medical test at the Dementia Telemedicine Control Center of Gangwon Province, Korea. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan-test, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 14.0.
Results: The average score for ENC was 3.24 and the factor which had the highest score was ¡¯management of family problems¡¯. ENC had significant correlations with degree of symptoms in EWD¡¯s and with family care burden. Variables significantly influencing ENC were degree of symptoms in EWD¡¯s, and family care burden, income and education level. These variables accounted for 59.9% of the variance of ENC.
Conclusion: Findings of this study suggest that nurses should consider degree of symptoms of EWD and care burden of family members when planning educational programs and/or conducting research.
